Hobbs Horticulture is a bare-root nursery in Hope, Maine — hardy fruit and nut trees, heirloom apple scions, and native plants from a multi-generation Hobbs family farm.
Hobbs Horticulture is a small bare-root perennial-plant nursery at 992 Barnestown Rd in Hope, Maine, owned by Everett Smith Jr. The nursery specializes in hardy fruit and nut trees, seeds, scions, and beneficial native woody perennials — all propagated and grown on the farm Smith now stewards at the north end of Hobbs Pond. The Hobbs family fruit-growing history reaches back generations: ancestor James P. Hobbs (1838-1904) canvassed for a Geneva, NY fruit-tree nursery; later Everett N. Hobbs became one of the first (and possibly the first) Maine farmer to grow peaches successfully, and corresponded with Cornell's pomology professor Richard Wellington. New orchard plantings began in 2020 with heirloom regrafts; the nursery side launched in 2022, with first online sales in fall 2023. Highlights include apple scion wood for grafting — heirlooms like the Blue Pearmain and a recent Hobbs release named St. Mary's, after Hope resident Marion "Mama Duck" Hart. Ships when plants are dormant: typically November and April for Zone 5b. Custom bench grafts available.
